Personal background
I am computer technician working in northern California. I really only have one hobby and that is tinkering with all things computer related. People always ask me how I can work on computers all day and then go home to spend even more time on them? Well I always say the same thing... My stuff works and there is nothing I have to fix. The SETI search began for myself as a use for all my systems "downtime." I felt that it was a waste for the boxes to sit and do nothing so here I am.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run Boinc/Seti for several reasons. The primary reason I run it that it is an ignorant sentiment of man to believe he is alone in the Universe. There are so many billions of stars and planets out there that statistically speaking there has to other intelligent life on a distant world somewhere. So for this reason I participate in the help provide the proof of extraterrestrial life. Now, I have no way of knowing whether it may be "good" or "bad" life in terms of their sentiments towards man but... at least we will know. The second reason is to utilize my systems "spare" processing time in a manner that amuses me as well as benefits science. I run Boinc on several platforms and my mac-mini outperforms them all. It even clobbers my dual xeon workstation, linux comes in third, mostly due to older boxes. Its still amusing that my smallest cheapest machine is also my fastest. Greatly speaks to windows inefficiency, anyway they'll be burning those bits as much as possible.
