Profile: Georgios Maragopoulos

Personal background
I am a 25 year old Greek student in Coventry University of UK. I hold a B.Eng (Hons) in manfacturing with management. I am currently doing an M.Sc in Competative manufacturing.

I enjoy my studies a lot (a doctorate cannot be far away!). I enjoy reading science fiction and fiction novels as well as history. My favourite scinece fiction writers are Isaac Asimov and Arthur C Clarke. My favourite fiction writes are Ernest hemingway and Nikos Kazanzakis.

I also enjoy building plastic models, chess, good music, and like every other greek a cup of coffee (lots of sugar and milk, thank you very much!) with good company to chat.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Imagine an endless field which has been sawn with corn seeds. Is it possible that only one seed will become a corn plant? Of course not. We are not alone in the cosmos. There are galaxies, groups of galaxies, super groups of galaxies. Each and every star is bound to have a number of planets around it. And these planets may harbor life. Some of this life may even have evolved more than on our own home planet.

All we have to do is listen.

But listening alone may not be enough. We may not be technologicaly advanced enough. In other words we might be deaf. We should do something else. Like the newcomer in the neighborhood we should introduce ourselves to the neighbours. The beacon will such an introduction. In this becon we should include samples of our civilisation. Maybe the beacon transmitting music, our own images or those of art and technological achievements.

We should built this beacon in such way that even if our own civilisation ends some day the beacon will stand as a silent witness of our past existance.

Seti@home may be our best chance for the time being to listen to something. This is why i run it and thats why every person should do it.

help this research if you can! We can only benefit from it!
