I am a law student attending school at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC. I have worked in higher education for the past 13 years before attending law school and still do consulting work helping colleges and universities improve their financial aid operations. I am one of the oldest law students at Campbell :) Making a mid-career change is exciting and scary but once done is so rewarding and meaningful!

| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |

The SETI@home project is an amazing concept. Distributed use of computing power as applied to a problem is a wonderful idea. I only wish I had known about the project earlier. As for ET, I would like to think that they exist. The significant circumstantial evidence on Earth of encounters is compelling -- even after you remove all of the bogus fraudulent claims. As for the possible benefits and dangers of discovery, one could argue we have already been discovered and that our technology is inadequate to discover them. Is this true? I do not know. Should we broadcast our existence with a beacon? It's a gamble if in fact alien life would be hostile to us. It's also a gamble for many even if they are not hostile but they interact -- remember the Prime Directive from Star Trek.... I do believe any interaction will fundamentally change us. Whether that will be for the better or worse is speculative and a matter of personal opinion. Having expoused all of these views, sure -- why not -- roll the dice and send the beam. I would rather live a life of exploration than confine myself to only things that are known.
As for SETI@home -- I run it because I think it is a great concept, I believe I am part of a larger positive effort and I like the screen saver!
