Personal background
I am a 29 year old windows and web application developer. I specialize in ASP.NET/VB.NET web applications with MS-SQL database back-ends. I love spending time with my wife, 5 year old daughter and 3 year old son. I started using SETI on June 19, 2000 and have since loaded it on all of my servers. I'm glad to be a part of this project and am more than happy to contribute some CPU cycles.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
My personal view is that SETI@home is a very worth while cause. I believe that extra terrestrial life could very well exist and it is quite arrogant of us to think that out of the over 100 billion stars in just our Milky Way galaxy, we are the only planet with life on it. Mathematically, that is very hard to believe, not to mention that there are also roughly 100 billion galaxies, making a total of approximately ten thousand billion stars (10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000).

I think we should continue seeking signs of life and transmitting signs of our own. We should, however, consider the information we're transmitting very carefully. If some species on another planet somewhere is also looking for life and they come across something from us, that information will be our "first impression". Just as if we found a signal from another culture, we would use that first transmission to determine what kind of society they are and exactly what security stance we would need to take. So, if we don't want to be vaporized upon first contact, we should probably send something nice and peaceful into space.
