Personal background
I've been "space crazy" for as long as I can remember. Science - fact and fiction - have always been important in my life. I've been an amateur astronomer since I was a kid and have never lost my fascination for space and the mysteries it holds. Although I long ago gave up my goal of becoming an astronaut :-) and now am in business, being involved in SETI@Home has renewed my excitement about space and astronomy. I run SETI@Home on both MAC and Windows computers at home and at work in my effort to help find ET.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I fully believe that contact with non-terrestrial intelligent life will happen in my lifetime. Although stories about government conspiracies are fascinating, I don't believe that contact - when it does come - will be able to be kept secret. True contact has not happened yet. We'll be "visited" first simply because our technology is still so backwards. It's a bit scary: will they be enlightened and peaceful or will we find out all those science fiction stories about invading aliens were really true? Since we probably won't have a choice when we are discovered, I can only hope the intellectual and scientific advancements that will make it possible for us to be visited will go hand in hand with spirituality and enlightenment. Since contact with alien intelligence would completely transform our view of ourselves and the universe - mankind should be proactive and both seek contact and take steps to make it more likely for us to be found. I am thrilled about participating in SETI. What an opportunity! I am involved in a global human effort to accomplish something exciting. How many such opportunities does a single person have? Besides, as a technology nut, every newer and better computer I buy means another machine to run SETI!
