Personal background
I am a tuba playing pawnbroker that likes to raise critters in my spare time. I currently have 12 chickens, 2 ducks, a goose, 2 sheep, 5 goats, 3 cows, 3 horses, 20 emus, a cockatiel, a dog, and a cat. I have been looking for the sheet music for the tuba part to "Close Encounters" so that I can serenade my menagerie with some seti@home type music. (And possibly call in a few aliens while I'm at it!)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
If we do in fact discover life in space, I'm betting that they will be further advanced than us and at the same time they would almost have to be as aggressive as we are. No life form on this planet exists for long without a struggle, the more successful the life form, the more aggressive it has become. Why should the rest of the universe be different? Should we discover another group of beings, it is nearly a given that they will be as or more aggressive than humans. Not a happy thought! We should transmit to the rest of the universe because it is not in our nature to slink away from danger, but to face it head-on. After all, we all gotta die sometime, so lets try to learn as much about this universe as fast as we can and damn the consequences. Simple musical progressions should give any listeners out there all the evidence they need to conclude that intelligent life is here without giving away too much information as to our current state of technology.

I am involved with seti@home because this organization has demonstrated an amazing facility to "think outside the box." They needed mega-computing power that they couldn't afford and devised a way to get it donated to them for free, yet it costs the donors virtually nothing to give this valuable commodity away. If the US government could take a lesson or two from seti@home folks our taxes would probably be cut in half. My hats's off to this kind of creativity!
