Profile: Jim Bridges

Personal background
I am fifty-five years old and live with my family in Washingtonville, NY. We have lived here since 1979, when we bought our house. Before then, my wife and I lived in the Chelsea area of New York City. While she was born and raised in the Bronx, I grew up in the small midwest town of Lebanon, Illinois.

As to occupation, that has changed over the years too. Currently I serve as the minister to two, small Unitarian Universalist congregations, one in NY State and the other in PA. Before being ordained in 1998, I worked as a school psychologist in a variety of settings, including schools, hospitals, and clinics.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe the search of extraterrestial life makes sense, and hence my joining in on the SETI project. Creation is far too grand and complex to believe that only our planet Earth contains sentient life forms. I don't know if we will ever discover extraterrestrial life, but I believe the search is worthwhile and warrants continuation.

I believe there potentially are many benefits and dangers to such a discovery. It would advance our knowledge and understanding of life, and that would be a benefit under any circumstances. Of course, a disadvantage could result from possible disease or contagion stemming from extraterrestial contact and the introduction of truly foreign microbes. It is hard to say if the knowledge of extraterrestial life forms alone would be a benefit or disadvantage - for such knowledge could certainly redesign the welterschauung of many people.

I do not believe that we should send a beacon for others to find. I find it more secure and wise to be the observer rather than the observed - especially when we do not know who or what we are attracting. We have no way of knowing whether other life forces are benign or hostile, so I believe caution is the wisest route to follow.
