Personal background
I'm a computer technician from Offenbach near Frankfurt/Main in Germany. I'm 30 years old (2002) and living together with my fiancée. I am very much interested in science and technology, especially computer science and anything that has to do with space exploration. I have read many books on this subject and I am a member of the Archaeology, Astronautics and SETI Research Organization (A.A.S.) which investigates the theory that the myths and legends of ancient times are actually real reports of extraterrestrial visits. One more reason for me to find ET! And that's why I'm proud to take part in the SETI@Home project.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I'm sure that extraterrestrial life must exist. In fact, the opposite (that we are the only intelligent beings in this universe) seems rather improbable. (The conditions in our universe would have to be such that they allow exactly one species to evolve - neither none, neither few, but just one! When you think of that, the conclusion that there must be at least some other intelligent species is inevitable.)

We should also make active attempts to contact extraterrestrial civilizations. Then there should be an exchange of scientific knowledge and technology. At the moment, however, mankind would have to be ashamed of presenting itself to anyone in its current "state": war, violence, profit and power as the only goal, environmental pollution etc. are certainly not suited for being considered a worthy inhabitant of this universe...

First, however, we must find them. That's why I participate in the SETI@home project. I think this project is a great idea, but I'm afraid its scope of search is far too narrow. One should also look for light signals etc., and we must not forget that communication at light speed is too slow for practical purposes over the huge distances separating the stars. I am sure that, despite the current scientific understanding, there is a way to break the light barrier and to communicate using faster means. We might be like the natives looking for smoke signals from other islands to find out if there are people living there. They don't find any. Because the people on those islands use telephones...
