Personal background
I'm in my mid-20s, from Sherborne in Dorset, have a BSc in Astrophysics, and I work in the rocket propulsion industry - I do, honest!
I live for the thrill of upgrading my computer, leaving no slot unfilled, no new technology un-tamed, and no metal surface un-brushed-aluminised.
There was a time that I used to reinstall my OS at least once a month, but now that XP is around that kind of thinking has gone out the window, and I'm happy to have S@H running quietly in the background.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Life does exists somewhere else in the universe. Look at the statistics, it's indisputable. But, whether we will find it remains something I doubt very much. The distances involved and the methods of looking make it very unlikely. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't look does it! If we thought like that we'd be no better than the zealots that have scuttled the scientific efforts of so many for so long.
What we learn by looking is the good that will come of all this, and much has be learnt already. I wish the SETI people the best of luck in finding your next funding :)
And now a thought
It ought to be possible to calculate how much power is consumed by the S@H project overall. I bet it's a darn huge wattage! It should be simple, add a few more bytes to the results saying what CPU S@H is on, combine with the statistics of power output by CPU and viola, a wattage per workunit. Or would that be too dangerous! Might the greenies of the world begin to complain - "SETI@home is causing global warming, it must be stopped". Gimme a break...
