Personal background
I am a life-long computer addict. I spend more time in front of a computer than any other single use of my time, including sleep. I went to Ripon College for two years, joining the Theta Sigma Tau co-ed fraternity while I was there. Now, 10 years later, I am again a student of Computer Security at ITT. After having roamed the country, I have returned to my home state of New Mexico, probably permenantly. I am engaged to be married to a wonderful woman, and am enjoying being a step-father to her wonderful daughter. My other pastimes include politics, hiking, skiing, politics, gaming of all forms(except gambling), and did I mention politics?
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It seems more unlikely to me that God exists than that extra terrestrial life exists. Millions of people belive in God, I believe in extra-terrestrial life. I don't believe in aliens at Roswell, or any of the other stories of alien encounters circulated in out culture, but I do believe that the possibility of an encounter with an alien intelligence exists. The chances of finding this intelligence with SETI are slim at best, but to finally proove that we are not alone in the universe is a goal worth the effort against the odds. The risks of contact with an alien intelligence are real, and could even include the destruction of humanity. But, the potential for advancement of humanity outweigh the risks in my mind, and so we should do any project that has the potential of increasing the chances of contact, including creation of a beacon that would alert a viewing intelligence to our presence, location, and desire for non-violent contact.
