Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Based on my very limited experience (compared to the profesors and doctors here at UML), life out there is almost a mathematical certanty. If one thinks about it, there are billions of billions stars out there, and if 1 of each billion contained a star capable of supporing planets, and of those 1 in a billion was capable of supporting life, and of those 1 in a billion could support intellegent life, then there is a huge chance there are others out there.
The benifits and dangers are astronomocal in perportion. you could have advances in medical science, standards of living, food production, but the costs could also be large. the Star Trek (yes im sort of a trekker.) vulcan first contact scenariop is an immensly optimistic one, and a very good hope at that, but what happens if they arnt so friendly, if the borg find us first (equally unlikley, but possible), then the entire planet would be in trouble.
Sending a beacon out would not be cost effective, in order to wide spread an entire signal, to effectivly cover a large amount of area, one would have to silence all radio transmissions from earth for an extended period, then transmit, then maintain silence to listen for a response. but like in the movie contact, we have been flooding space with radio signals for about 60 years. that means about 60 light years of space has been flooded with our radio waves. it is feasable that something withen that range could have picked up our signal.
As i stated above i am sort of a trekker, and the promary theme of star trek, as stated before each show, is to "seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man (and women) have gone before" i believe SETI is an extention of that. |
