Personal background
I am a college student in Arizona. Right now I am majoring in Chemistry and minoring in Web Design. I am using government grants to get through college; fortunately, the college I go to is one of the cheapest in the nation. On my spare time, I like to work on my website, compose music, write, and create art. For a person who has science and computers as their strong point, I do a lot of art. I do not make any money from my art, since I post it on my website. I like to think I have one of the most unique styles in each area I dabble in. My mind works almost like hard logic at times, but I think that gives my art a more unique feel. I love to learn new things, and I spend most of my day studying or reading the news (that is if I don’t have a love to devote most of my attention to). I listen to music and watch TV often, but in my defence I am also working on projects while I am doing this. In music, I listen to Death Metal (the athiestic and intellectual styles of it), and my favorite band is Immolation. On TV I love to watch sci-fi shows and movies, except the ones which have terrible science (sci-fi channel you really need to stop making original movies). So I am a nerd, but with style. ;)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Statistically extraterrestrial life must exist. It is possible that humans are the first life form in the universe, but the predicted age of the universe makes it unlikely. Where they live and how they live is a mystery, which makes their discovery a mystery. We might find intelligent life through orderly radiation, or we might find bacteria embedded on a meteorite. I believe the dangers of finding this life are minimal. It would be rare to get infected by an alien virus, since the DNA would be far less compatible than with terrestrial species. There is a chance to get infected by bacteria, but they are easier to fight off than viruses. For possible hostile species, I don’t see what earth really has to offer in resources. Earth elements can be found on many other planets around the universe and humans don’t make good slaves. Machines and other animals out perform humans in physical tasks, and people have problems doing repetitive mental tasks as well. Our best resource is information. The only way to obtain information is either cooperation or infiltration. And I don’t think a species would risk infiltration.
I think we could transmit a beacon. I don’t know if extraterrestrials would be able to decipher the information, but they would be able to see that it is organized. But we could send a binary message with mathematical equations and greetings in all of the earth languages in case that they can translate it. We can send the location of our planet and its surroundings, and the science of our planet (maybe the percentage of elements on the earth). And if we get a beacon back, we can send a more complex message.
I run SETI@home because it is my contribution to the project. Since I am a college student, I am low in cash, but by volunteering my time to analyze data it saves SETI money. It is something I can do to benefit the attempt for discovery. I do not know the ins and outs of the SETI project, but I think it is a
