Personal background
Originally from Montana, living in Arizon since 1992... private investor / loan broker. Age:51 Semi-professional Hang Glider Pilot... hold longest distance flight record in AZ in single-surface glider (52 miles) Engineer with a varied background (Chemical, Thermodynamics, Nuclear & Mechanical Engineering)

Leaning (again) how to do SERIOUS backpacking... enjoying the effort it takes to get into shape... I'd fly more... but the forests are closed because of fire danger... so.. I'm trying to learn how to survive the desert heat, and learn more about the natural surroundings by living ("part-time") in the desert and carry my "House on my Back!"

We can learn from nature's lesson of dealing with extremes in temperature and moisture. In a matter of hours go from incredible desert / Sonoran living to 13,000 feet mountains with white cap and sub-zero weather... only in AZ!!

Regards to all who regard others. ghi
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
There is little doubt in any "serious" scientist's mind that life outside the earth's solar system exists. However, in what form and quantity may take substantial periods of time to discover.

Transmit a "beacon"? I don't think that anyone with a conception of just how far a "light year" really is could say, "Yeah, let's leave a light on the porch!"

If the technology exists in other "worlds" to travel at speeds greater than the speed of light... we'd probably know about it by now. Any effort on our part to transmit beacons of radio waves or light sources would be a feeble attempt to throw a rock into the ocean with the hope that someone across the sea will notice a miniscule ripple... not a chance. We're in this solar systme by ourselves for a long time coming...
