Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
"Seek first to understand, then to be understood."
First we must listen and learn, like children. Who are our neighbors? What are the norms and informal rules of the community? Chances are that if there's intelligent life nearby, it will learn of us before we learn of it. And any sufficiently advanced civilization will realize that the best thing for us (and likely for it) is to ignore us until we mature sufficiently to participate in the larger community. Given the current state of homo sapiens, this could take centuries.
