Profile: David R. Caldwell

Personal background
I live in Columbus Ohio. My boss calls me the "philosopher". I usually know a little about any subject matter and always have some kind of opinion on it. I consider myself to be a seeker of truth. I am 45 years old, my CURRENT profession is as a consultant within the MIS field (for 20 some years). My hobbies are Fishining, computers (of course), sports, Fishing, watching the Discovery Channels, and Fishing. (I used to object to fishing on the grounds that I personally would't like to be treated in the same manner as the fish. Imagine setting in a restaurant, taking a bit of delicious filet mignon and bang, a hook snares you through the mouth and pulls you toward the sky. However, in considering the concept of the food chain itself, I got over the objection!)

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I do think extraterrestrail life exists. Good thing you didn't say intelligent life, some of us are still looking for that on this planet. Well... perhaps it's more accurate to say that we are trying to determine why some life has been bless with intelligence and others, well.. aren't so blessed. As to when and how we will find it, I couldn't speculate, perhaps never. Speaking to the benefits and dangers, those are certainly as great as our imaginations have already taken that question, maybe farther. It would be my hope that life, that doesn't destroy itself during it's evolution, would be wise. However, we have made it this far and our wisdom sometimes seems inadequate for our problems.

Should we transmit beacons? I believe we've already been doing that for over 50 years now. However, what they see from our TV broadcasts might cause them to run away screeming or consider blowing up earth to put in a hyperspace bypass. If I were sending the information, I'd send mathematically formulas, or prime numbers, nothing original like Monty Pithons' Flying circus, but we've already sent that, haven't we?

I run Seti@Home in hope that we do find signs of life. The project is great and I have only one suggestion, if you do find signs of life, try to determine what they eat. I wouldn't want to find a hook in my mouth will enjoying my favorite steak. However, it would mean a symetrical ending to my life.
