Personal background
I live in Bethlehem, NC, USA, and at age 74, I am a retired electrical engineer with an MEE from RPI. I have worked on satellite transmitters and receivers. In my Amateur Radio hobby, I have participated in a study of radio propagation during eclipses. I have observed moons of Jupiter on a friends telescope, and have observed and reported on the intensity of variable stars at the RPI observatory (on a very cold night). I read a lot of science fiction. As you can see, I have had various connections with space.
I do computer art, and have put on shows of my work at area galleries, using 2 computers. These multimedia shows include stills, animations, and sound. I also do some painting and charcoal drawing, mainly of female forms.
I spend 90% of my time as caregiver for my dear wife of 49 years, who is unable to do much as a result of serious medical conditions.
Up until last year, I was a doubter re the existence of intelligent life outside of Earth, because of several factors: 1. No planets had been found in any other system. 2. Life in extreme environments had not been seen. 3. Mars appeared to be lifeless. 4. The spontaneous formation of life seemed unlikely.
Now, 1. planets around distant stars have been found. 2. Life has been found in the most unlikely parts of Earth. 3. A possibility that Mars once had at least some sort of life. 4. A possibility that life from somewhere else somehow migrated to Earth, which changes the odds for life occurring here.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I was interested in SETI@home ever since I heard of it in the Planetary Society publications, of which I am a member. Until recently I only had Amiga computers, 4 of them, which served my needs, and are superior for computer art, which I do. Amigas cannot do SETI@home because there in no program for them to do the SETI@home computing. Now I have 2 pc's, mainly because they are better for Internet use. Therefore, I have gotten into SETI, and have already completed 6 data units in about a week. I have an 800 Mhz Celeron processor with 128 Mb of ram. My net connection is a local cable tv company.
The reason I do it is to help accelerate the observations. I get a kick out of anything mathematical, especially if it is constructive. I would like to be the one to find ET.
