Personal background
Every bit helps and I'm just a small participant. I'm participating only in the SETI programm, not to prove we can detect intelligent extra terrestrial signals but rather to help prove that we need to go about it in another way.
I'm European, Dutch (The Netherlands), live in Estonia (North East of EU, 80km below Helsinki, Finland) and work all over the EU and China, Indonesia in low-tech stone business. Yes, a low-techie joined the high tech Search.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home not to find any signals but rather to help speed up the proces (however small my contribution is) leading to the realisation that we have to go about it in another way.

I believe it's a great idea to use many small contributors to help achieve a big outcome. Also in the other programms.

SUGGESTION: Many of my friends are still unaware of the SETI prgramm. Even if they are aware of SETI they are unaware of SETI@home programm. Even then, they wouldn't mind using the SETI screensaver in computer downtime but they are simply too lazy to make the installation. So, if you would be able to include the screensaver in a Windows platform like Vista, XP, it would defenitely result in more participants. Or Apple system of course.
