Personal background
Hello,

I am an Army brat. For those who don't know what this means, I moved a lot during my childhood. Many things define me; I am a father, a husband, a college student, a NCO in the Air Force, and a pagan. If I thought about it I could think of many other things, but this is sufficient. I don't have many hobbies but I love spending time with my family and reading. Classes and work fill up much of the time that is not spent with my wife and daughter.

Currently, I run SETI@home on two notebooks.

Sony Vaio PCG-GRZ630
Pentium 4 (2.4 GHz)
40 GB Hard Drive
512 MB ram
Windows XP Home

and

Apple iBook
G4 (1 GHz)
60 GB Hard Drive
256 MB ram
Panther OS

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that my views on life on other planets is similiar to most other users of the SETI@home software. There are too many planets out there that we can be the only ones. Also, I believe that to say that we are the only beings capable of "higher" thought is arrogant and just this side of closed-minded. As a species, we have much to learn.

There are many dangers involved in searching out new life. If you go out into the wilderness you stand a good chance of discovering creatures that will both amaze us and possibly view us as a viable food source. I beleive that the same is true with the universe, although this is quite a bit larger and at least we have knowledge of the majority of creatures on this planet. There will ofcourse be benefits. What we don't know is in what form the benefits will take. What worries me the most is not the aliens reaction to our presence but what we will do to them or their world. If we have learned anything from history is that we will completely take advantage of them and then conquer them if they offer the slightest resistance. Our civilizations can't even get along with each other, let alone another planet. Don't get me wrong, the search for life on other planets is a noble pursuit, but we should get our act together before we make contact with some species capable of putting us in our place.
