Personal background
I've been in this area all my life, but I'm surely a Virginian son. After returning to College at 26 to get my Physics/Mathematics Degree. I took the BS, added a CCNA, then a MCSE, and became a Geek (and I use the term with reverence). It's all about figuring out how things work. Figuring out computers makes for a nice life. I get to build multi-terabyte Servers and hundreds-of-users networks with million of dollars in equipment, all on someone else’s dime. This is the greatest country on the planet. I love it here just outside Washington DC. I have a wonderful fiancée, love my job, and spend spare time mountain biking and paintballin'. Lately, I've been dedicating machines about the workplace to Seti@Home. I figure it gives the machines something to do.

And finally, my own Public Service Announcement:

Slow drivers keep right.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As for life in the universe, we can pretty much lay out how the seeds of life got planted on this planet, from a molten ball of rock, to a lush green planet. No matter what odds you place on each individual step, and then on the combined effort, the universe beats those odds hands down. The problem is, we are in the ass-crack side of the universe. If you look at 3-d models (the best we can do so far), there is nothing out here. If there were intelligent life out there, they have no reason to come out here. I think any aliens that have come here have just been kids playing around. You know, slumming. I do believe that other species are aware of us, they just have no interest in meeting us. It won’t be until we develop the ability to travel much closer to “c” that we will force their hand. Until then, we hold out hope that we can detect some evidence; some shred of proof that life is out there. I say have a little faith and work the math. Either way, they are out there.

Speaking of traveling fast, if any of you guys working on that read this, get it in gear, will you. Fuel/air topped off at 25,000, and your new ion drive should get that probe up to 65,000. That’s in the right direction, so let's just keep it going. Remember, you can build in space, now.

As far as the issue of actually communicating with aliens. Put me in front of intelligent life, and I can communicate with them. Period. Don't worry about it, just call me.

I run SETI@Home in hopes of actually proving what I know in my heart to be true.
