Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
To be quite honest with you, i think that the universe is just too large to have only one sentient race, and one planet capible of supporting life. If this project continues, we may discover a radio signal from an intelligent race. However, there is the possibility that another race may have a completely different communications medium. Nevertheless SETI's project is important, the benefits of trying far outweigh the costs of the project.

In the event that a "intelligent signal" is found, I don't really think we should be in such a hurry to make a first contact. Who knows what their response will be, and who knows they will be capible to respond at all? How will we penetrate an obious language barrier?

I run SETI@home because considering the time lag between when signals are taken down from the radio observatories, and when we process them, it is clear to me that the project does not have the computing power to process and analyze all of the raw data pulled down from the radio observatories. I think that the use of SETI@home's userbase will help to decrease this time-lag somewhat.
