Personal background
I am 24 years old and a network engineer for a large cable company. Some of my hobbies include computer gaming, taking my dog for a walk and playing guitar. Seti@home has become an avid hobby of mine. I started a seti group called Serial Experiments (yes animie fans Lain). Lain has to be one of my favorite animes. Why Serial Experiments? Well, in Lain's world she had to face a great many realities in the Wired in order to bridge the gap between reality and the Wired. What this means to me is connecting physical world and something greater, whether it be spiritual, supernatural or a reality we don't understand... at least yet.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think extraterrestrials exist? How can they not? I mean look at the night sky. What do you see? Thousands upon thousands of stars? No, thousands upon thousands of solar systems and millions of planets would be more correct. To think we are alone is ignorant in my opinion. I suppose the benefits of discovering life not from this world brings enlightenment, that we are not alone. As far as dangers from such a venture well, religion. What I mean by this is people will have to adapt spiritually. We may no longer be created in god’s image and there may be a new concept of death. As far as earth being invaded by extraterrestrials, I think we have a greater chance of being hit by an asteroid. Chances are we have been visited by beings not of this world. Any being that has the technology to visit other worlds most likely is researching and charting space and species they find. Should we transmit a beacon for others to find? Most definitely, however I believe radio waves are too slow and primitive in nature. Life forms that exist elsewhere and travel the stars probably use a form of communication we cannot grasp, at least yet. And for those life forms that have not left their solar system, by the time our radio signals reach their solar system; their world and ours will most likely be gone. I run seti@home because I believe that our transmissions will be picked up in our solar system. Perhaps when aliens are either studying us or believe it's time to open our world up to the interstellar community.
