Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I decided to make my contribution to SETI@home as I believe this to be an ingenious use of computing resources. And as far as extraterrestrial life goes, while I believe that it exists I doubt we can find it. This is due to a relatively small window during which a contact can be made. We won't understand a civilization that is too advanced and it probably will not want to interfere with our, primitive in its eyes, affairs. On the other hand a civilization 50 years younger that ours does not have means to contact us. Thus we are talking about a window that is probably 100 to 200 years wide. Chances that some other civilization within contact range is so close technologically to ours is practically zero. But, since those processors are idling otherwise, it does not hurt to try.
