Profile: W. Michael Christy

Personal background
I currently live in SW Ohio and was born in the fall of 1965. I spent some time in the Navy, was trained to be an electronics/radar/missile technician and got to travel to Europe and other interesting places. I have been "into" computers since I was fourteen. I started college a few years ago to pursue a degree in computer science with a minor in electrical engineering, but it seems to be taking forever and I have yet to find a job where I am paid to actually touch a computer -not as a secondary duty...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I try to reserve an opinion on whether extraterrestrial life exists. Believing in something without evidence is just as bad as dismissing the possibility without any evidence to the contrary. However, on a personal level I would like to believe that we are not alone. It would really be great if there was intelligent extraterrestrial life that we could compare notes with and share the lessons of our mistakes.

As for any benefits or dangers: I am a bit cynical about the human race and believe, if we should ever encounter extraterrestrial life, then we will mess it up somehow. What would really be ironic is if such extraterrestrial life were very similar to us, albeit more technically advanced, and decided to subjugate us as "cheap labor." ;)

Transmit a beacon? Sure, why not? If we ever hope to make contact with anyone/anything "out there," then we should transmit as well as try to receive signals. And, the information we transmit should be informative about us, but also keep in mind the fact that any extraterrestrial life we may find could be superior and not so friendly.

I run SETI@home for a couple of reasons. First, I really do not like the idea that we are the only life in this big cosmos, intelligent or otherwise! ;) So, I figure it is only fair that I do my little part to help the cause. Second, I am a computer science major at a local university and I am fascinated with distributed computing applications...
