Profile: Greytale

Personal background
I'm 27, I teach and study Foil and Sabre fencing at an academy of the sword in the SJ/SF CA bay area, I design web pages and graphical art; I act, write, play and sing music; I love photography, hiking, biking, dining out, and I'm a HUGE lover of great movies and actors. I'm very passionate about my life and my friends, I'm funny and love to make other laugh, yet very philosophical about life.

I first became interested in the SETI@home project when I heard about its existence! Another factor that helped me enjoy contributing was the movie "Contact", which I think was an exceptional movie regarding SETI, and painted a fairly artistic and clear message.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes. In a world of percentages and possibility, it is in many ways ludicrous to assume we're the only folks around. Not to mention man's 'truths' differ greatly from *actual* truths. Why ELSE would we call something a 'discovery'? To clarify: if I excitedly say "Hey, I'm flying to L.A.!!!" today, people say, "Good for you... what, do you want a cookie?". Back in the 1800's, I could have easily been arrested and forced to wear a sleeveless jacket. 'Nuff said?
2. Sure. To me, it's about results. In this sort of project, it doesn't happen in 5 years let alone 5 decades. That's above and beyond the normal scope of projects the human race takes on. Therefore, I don't think we can do enough until some contact is made--however the information sent is irrelevant to me until a proverbial 'handshake' is made. "Hello" should be good until we hear "Hello" back. THEN let's start deciding what to say, how to say it, who will say it, etc.
3. I run SETI@home because the contribution of everyone is neccesary. Besides, the ingenious plan doesn't require that I have to sit here and assess any data, my computer does it for SETI, and quite inocuously.

My only suggestion is to continue to attempt to get every single computer involved in the world. It would be different if SETI@home interuppted other doings, but it simply doesn't.
