Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I certainly hope that extraterrestrial life exists, because it would seem such a shame to waste the vastness of the universe for just the residents of the planet Earth. The chances of humans discovering "aliens" depends on so many factors that I don't know if it will happen soon, but if we don't erase our species entirely we will make contact some day. I would love to be around to see it happen, but it may take the SETI program 20 years or it may take humankind 2000 years to wait for a nearby alien to try to contact us. It we don't make an effort to send out a signal, how can we complain about never receiving signals? I think all intelligent species at some point should try to make contact with interstellar neighbors. Until we know more asbout these neighbors, our messages should just be basic mathematics to help others realize that some intelligence is out there. I believe in the SETI project and signed up for SETI@home on the first day I heard about the home program. I wish more people would join in -- every data packet helps!
