Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I do believe extraterrestrial life exsists. An unnumberable amount of systems like our own...how could there not be? I doubt Earth is the only planet in the galaxy that has the perfect match for living conditions. I don't think we'll discover extraterrestrial life, but it will discover us. Our technology is great, but not enough to be able to reach out and say hello. I think we have been visited already, but they want to keep it on the down low for if they all of the sudden appeared on the planet en mass, there would be mass confusion and hysteria. Humanity is not ready, close, but not ready. Besides, would you want to land on a planet who is hell-bent on cutting you open? Possible benefits, in my opinion, could be a boost in technology, insurance that we are "not alone" and a possible "neighbor" that we can learn from. However, who's to say that anyone we contact outside our system, or even inside for that matter, is going to be friendly? Caution will need to be taken. I believe that sending a tansmitting beacon would be a good idea to attract "guests". On the other hand, a violent enemy could see that as an open invitation. That would be like pasting a neon "X" on Earth. I run SETI@home because I want to help in discovering any possibilities that an intelligent, technological civilization is out there somewhere.
