Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Out of all the organizations out there asking for people to contribute something, this one has to be the one with the most forward vision. Yet it is also one with little thought about its implications. What if we were to find extraterrestrial life? What would we do? We would attempt to contact them and once we did would we find them willing to listen? Would they be willing to share anything with us? As a sentient species they should know that they should never disseminate their knowledge with other species less advanced in technology than they. Knowledge is power and power comes only with responsibility. We have not earned that responsibility. It is as if you gave a child a gun. Dangerous. We as a species are not ready to have this information. Aliens would never try to contact us unless they wanted us for some purpose in which case we should have never conducted the search in the first place. Then again I could be completely wrong which is why I am a contributing member.
