Personal background
I am a senior IT person working now in my home town of Calgary Alberta Canada as a Network Security Consultant for an IT company. I have been with SETI@Home for awhile now and after a few false starts with BOINC I think I'll stick with it.
As a new Grandfather I've got my Grandchildren, (girls and boys) interested in Space, Science and Computing. They are now convinced that either they or their children will have jobs or even homes not on this planet, but in space. When my Grandfather settled here from eastern Canada he could not have known or understood my work, I fly all over the world and back again in hours. Or, believed his eyes as to how I live now with the electronics in my home and vehicles. It will be the same for them and I. I trust
They think this SETI search is very cool and we talk, between us, about it a lot. The other adults in their families aren't getting it or don't understand. That's a shame, but I will look for them and feed their curiosity as long as I can. I know it will be enough.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
If one takes Drake's equation into the argument, then yes, it must be likely that extraterrestrial life exists. Even so, I think that life is a natural consequence of the physics of the Universe. Remember the Strong Anthropic Principle? As to when, that is crystal ball stuff.
I hope we as humans can get our act together before we are met by extraterrestrials. The dangers are evidenced in our own history of superior and inferior technologies meeting up with each other. The benefits could take on the appearance of miracles or at least save us centuries of technological and sociological evolution.
I think it is too late to stop sending out signals to other civilizations. Remember TV and Radio? Maybe we should send out something meaningful this time, just to set the record straight.
I have wondered about life on other worlds since I was a child when my Dad told me about the possibility. I need to do at least this much. This is a scientific endeavor that all humans can participate in, which so large it may effect the planets future for ever.
In my opinion, SETI@home is doing a good job. Thank You
