Personal background
My name’s Rui, I’m from Portugal and I’m 26 (born on April, 5th, 1976). I’m a Human Resources professional, and tough I graduated in Organizational Psychology, I’ve always had a keen interest in the “Hard” sciences and tech’s like Physics, Astronomy, Aerospace, etc.

Obviously, I’ve been an avid reader of Science Fiction all my life. I can’t stop wondering if some of the most brilliant minds of our time would have developed an interest in space exploration, haven’t been for some “loonies” like Asimov, Clark, K.Dick or Heinlein, just to mention a few…

Tough I work in Lisbon, I live in a small city in its suburbs that has a very long name: “Vila Franca de Xira”. I practice a bit of archery as a Hobby and a lot of Net surfing as an Obsession. :)

Being a people person (professionally…), I go out a lot, and I do try to spend the most time as possible with my friends and girlfriend. I’ve always been fascinated by people and by their behaviour. That’s why I can say that I spend my time as I always wanted to, either at work, at home, at the pub or at the club with my “mates and soul-mate”.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I decided to participate in this global quest for signs of an E.T. civilization for several reasons. Most are just plain and obvious, certainly shared by us all. Others are more related to my area of expertise.

As a Psychologist, there are some things that always have fascinated me about the possibility of finding E.T. intelligence. The initial reaction of the worldwide public would be amazing, not only in sociological and political terms, but also on a psychological level. Such a disclosure will bring such an imbalance in our own self-concept, that it would take some time for the common man to accept and integrate in its internal schemata the obvious and simple fact that most of us here already take for granted: We’re not alone.

As we move the centre of the universe from our own selves to the stars, much will change. I believe that unquestionable proof of E.T. intelligence will bring about the greatest socio-political revolution since someone decided to burry some grain in a forgotten field in the middle east, just a “few” thousand years ago.

The contact itself would bring about some new and challenging problems: First of all, we may expect “them” to have mental models and thought processes so “alien” to us, that initial communication and understanding could be nearly impossible. Secondly, the universe is not Star Trek: Any civilization that we will eventually encounter will almost certainly not look even slightest humanoid (moreover English-speakers…).

One thing that we can’t forget is that we’re just looking for signs, ripples in a long stale pond, made by stones that could have been thrown there aeons ago. Signs that can be nothing more than fossilized remains of a long dead civilization, preserved in the infinite emptiness of space. But a sign, any sign would make this little blue dot we call home seem less lonesome.

Keep your heads up and CPU's pumpin', Rui Lima de Almeida.
