Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe extraterrestrial life exists, but I also believe that we will likely never come in contact with it. If there is intelligent life out there, in an of itself a one in a trillion chance, what are the odds they too will discover and make use of radio waves, again another one in a trillion chance. And even more importantly, what are the odds they will be using the exact frequencies we are looking for? It seems daunting to say the least. But I believe it is a worthy cause, even if nothing is ever found, no one can say we didn't look (or listen). If we do find something, I believe it will be evidence of life that existed at one time, but I doubt we will actually communicate with them. I think humans have a responsibility to send a permanent beacon in space in all possible directions. If we don't do it, how can we expect any other life in the universe too? I think SETI@home is a great project and am happy to give my lazy computer something to do while I'm not working on it.
