Personal background
Today is Fat Tuesday, March 4, 2003. Sometime this evening this computer will complete 1,000 work units.

I have been looking forward to this day for more than 3 years. Last year I expanded my computer repair business and I now have three computers (only two right now as one is broken and being repaired) processing SETI data 24/7.

We have a peer to peer network, two machines run Windows XP Pro and this machine runs on Windows 98SE. Machine #1, this machine, is a Pentium lll-700, 1GB SDRAM PC-100, one 20GB HDD (C:) and a backup drive of 40GB. Machine #2 is an Intel Celeron 900, 256MB SDRAM PC-133 with two 40GB HDDs. Machine #3 is also an Intel Celeron 1.7Mhz, 256 SDRAM PC-133 with a 40GB HDD (C:) and a storage and backup drive of 80GB.

Machine #1 processes a data unit every 22 hours. #3 takes roughly 50 hours for each unit and #2 is down so I'm not sure about it. Obviously more memory makes a difference. I'd add more to machine #1 but Win98SE is maxed at 1GB.

In the near future, perhaps as a reward for completing 1,000 units, I will add a fourth machine. The anticipated architecture will be a dual processor Pentium 4, 2.4GHz with as much memory as the board (as yet undefined) will carry. Machine #1 will then be fully dedicated to SETI work and hopefully I'll cut the time in half to the second 1,000 units.
