Personal background
I am 20 years old, and currently in college earning a double bachelor's of science degree in Computer Science Systems Option and Applied Mathematics. I have been an avid sci-fi fan and have always been curious about space and what may lie beyond our current understanding of the universe. I hope that my part in Seti@home will help to bring about further interest in the exploration of space.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think extraterrestrial life exists. Since the majority of governments on this planet do not consider space exploration a priority I believe it will be the E.T.'s who make contact with us. I believe it will happen in the next 50 years as we begin to make more and more elaborate space objects.
The benefits are incomprehensible, we could learn a lot from a space faring society (hopefully a peaceful one). Everything from medicine to transportation could be a consequence of an encounter with another race.
Humans should definitely transmit a beacon which describes our desires to understand the universe and which explains our current achievements (such as art, music, engineering, biology, etc.).
I run seti@home to do my part in the enormous task of computing all of the results. Shared computing is a great concept which will likely lead to many discoveries which could not have been done by a single company's computing resources. I believe this project is a stepping stone to the furtherment of space exploration.
As for suggestions, I would like to have updates sent to me on the progress of the computed data.
