Personal background

New Page 1

I am 42 years old, a married computer professional with two sons, 13 and 16.
I have currently the following "farm" running seti:

A 1.8GHz P4, running Win98SE
A ghz thinkpad, running Win98SE
A 400MHz Celeron Desktop, running Win98SE
A 233MHz Pentium, running Linux-Slackware
A 166MHz Pentium, running Win98SE and the command line version
A 133MHz Pentium, running Linux-LRP

All computers are in use by us humans except for 5 and 6, which are more or
less zombie machines, only running SETI. This combo good for 6 units a day, more
if us humans would keep our hands off :)
My other hobbies are:

Ham Radio
Shortwave Listening
Teamfortress Classic (an online shootemup team game)
Tennis, bowling, and gardening
Bird-watching
Astronomy

While it might seem impossible to have time for all that, I believe we have
all the time there is. I'm an inveterate insomniac, better in the middle of the
night than in the morning.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1). Of course extraterrestrial life exists, it is only a matter of time before it is proven.
I believe that the discovery of proof of ET's will shake society to its foundation.
The danger is the loss of many human traditions and paradigms and the attendant negative effect upon mankind's hope.
The benefits are a new way of thinking about the world and the universe.
A fair swap I believe all in all.

2). I believe humans already transmit plenty of stuff that will no doubt be picked up by any ET's out there.
The limitations of light-space physics may limit the potential interaction, depending upon the advancement of the ET's.
I don't think a beacon is bad idea per se, just not necessary.

3). I run SETI@home to get some sense of satisfaction in the idle cycles.
I have supported the planetary society for years and feel that this project is an epiphany on many levels.
I would suggest that different levels of graphic detail be worked out for the windows client so that the user could customize for the level he/she wanted.
Maybe there should be 5 or so levels, from basic progress tracking to maximum graphs/pictures.
