Personal background
Retired at fortysomething-except for tinkering in the stock market now and then-I'm pleased to be able to participate in this project so as to put my CPU power(which is unused a large percentage of the time) to work on something with huge implications. Maybe we can even find a beacon from Heaven. I'm using a Pentium 4 at 1.8GHZ with RDRAM/NVIDIA.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Its hard to look out into the Cosmos and not be near certain that there has to be large numbers of intelligent life populating the vast, awesome, mindnumbing expanses of the Universe. But if such is the case, the Universe is going to be a very, very dangerous place also. One can only hope that when and if we ever do make direct contact with another Intelligence, the entity is not malicious exploiters, thousands of years ahead of us in most(love will always be the strongest force in the universe)areas. But I am going to be optimistic and say that we certainly should send beacons out, with great amounts of our art and scientific works, including all our knowledge as to our exact location. I was very pleased to find out about this project because, maybe one of us, maybe even me, can have a direct hand in what would be the most profound discovery in the history of Man. It would be great if SETI@home could send us users with lots of computing power some of those many thousands of gaussians to verify or analyze somehow. My hat is off to you people. Keep up the good work...E.M.
