Personal background
I'm a broadcast engineer for a NBC affliate. Enjoy the "science" of communications especially something as facinating as the SETI project. I also enjoy camping, hunting, fishing, and weight lifting.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I am firm believer that we are not alone in the universe. The odds of humans being the sole occupants of the universe are worse than the odds for winning power ball. I do believe that the discovery of other life will be largely up to those who wish to be "discovered". Yes by all means we should be listening for communications however the discovery of other life will be intentional. The benefits of this discovery far outweight any dangers, for if the life we discover has hostile intent what are we going to be able to do to stop them while on the other hand should the intent be peaceful think of all the possible benefits for our race. Every ascpet of life would be touch in a profound way.

2. I do believe we should transmit as signal for others to find although we largely do this all of the time (radio and television). Certainly to achieve this goal it would be advisable to transmit a highly directional signal covering a vast frequency spectrum with a great deal of power behind it but we really don't know in what direction to transmit. As far as the content of the message I would transmitt the same message contained in Voyeger, let's keep things simple for now.

3. SETI@home runs pretty much all of the time my computer is up. In some very small way I am assisting in project I believe in, what other reason do I need. I am glad this project has reached out to the public and has received such a great response. The chance of a SETI@home user being the one to discover a signal are fairly good given the number of participants. It just goes to show you what a group of like minded individuals can accomplish when they believe in something. The only suggestion I would have for people would be to pass the SETI@home information along to friends, get them involved, after all what good does "flying windows" do for advancing our race?
