Personal background
My name is Timothy and I live in North Carolina. I share this group’s fascination of the search. I own a website design and marketing company.

I spend my time between my wife and son, my computers, and the Discovery channel. All in all, a pretty boring guy!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Like most of the other members here, I have been fascinated with space since I was a child. The stars have always inspired me to imagine. I knew as a child I would never be able to journey to them the way I wanted. I could have joined NASA or worked at JPL or something, but what I wanted was my own personal Millennium Falcon to cruise the universe in!

I feel the opportunity of space exploration, on its most empirical level, has yet to be fully acknowledged by the general public. For me, the biggest opportunity lies in how it will transform our understanding of ourselves as a species and not necessarily our understanding of the galactic stew we are only now beginning to understand.

The SETI project is humankind’s first collective attempt to reach out to a species greater than our own. It serves as a harbinger of a gigantic, paradigm shift away from what was our species ultimate pretentiousness; that we are all that there is. That does not mean, however, that we are not special or unique in some way. In fact, it confirms exactly the opposite.

Now that we are starting to get some idea of how rare life truly is in the universe, what an awesome responsibility it places on us to respect and cherish the life that does exist on this planet. Each and every one of us is enjoying a payout in the biggest lotto in the universe… we are a sentient, living species.

When we do make contact, I will not be surprised. And I think there will be a collective, “Well…duh!” from individuals like the ones here in the SETI community that have always known, but haven’t been able to prove.
