Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extraterrestrial life certainly exists. The laws of physics and chemistry are the same everywhere in the universe. Given the number of possible life supporting planets and 15 billion years of trying, these laws will have worked elsewhere, perhaps numerous times.

We may or may not ever discover it or we may be discovered. The benefits to human philosophy and science are immeasurable. The dangers are, as with any discovery, real and unforeseeable.

As for transmitting a beacon, we are already doing that. Our planet is bright with information-filled electromagnetic radiation.

I run SETI@home to be a part of the proof of concept of distributed parallel supercomputing. I believe that we must search the skies. To find nothing is itself a form of discovery. If statistical analysis of radio signals reveals nothing we will have learned that we must try a different strategy.
