Personal background
Born in Belgaum,India in 1948 I graduated in Telecommunication engineering(1971) and obtained a PG Diploma in Electronics Design Technology from the Indian Institute of Science (1976). From the childhood I was fascinated by the sky and stars and desired to work in 'space' related area. I worked in the Indian Space Research Organization for over a quarter century in the field of satellite communications. I immigrated to Canada in 1999 with my wife and two children and presently working in an aerospace company.

Anything that deals with the mysteries of the universe interests me, astronomy, archeology, etc. I marvel at the progress that we humans have made in the last few decades and believe that at this rate we can solve many mysteries and invent methods to reach the stars and visit the ETs. On the other hand, I am also pained to realize that as humans our basic instincts have not changed since the days we dwelled in the caves. There have been many Chengese Khans, Alexanders and Asokas in our history who with an instinct to conquer killed fellow human beings in millions. Present events show we continue to destruct humankind and remind us that we are not a really civilized society yet. What a shame if a civilized ET sees us in our present state!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I strongly believe that extraterrestrial life exists. To quote from 'Contact' "what a waste of this vast space if it didn't (exist). However, we do not have the means with the conventional technology to communicate or contact the ET. Within a century, if we continue to make progress, perhaps we may find new methods totally different than what we can imagine today to communicate with or travel to distant stars. Until we find the new methods we should continue to search with the tools we have with us. Hence, I support SETI.
The benefits of discovering other civilizations outside our planet will be manyfold as we can learn many things from a civilization that has evolved totally differently from us. I do not perceive any danger from an advanced society.
We do not know if the ETs are anywhere close to humans in terms of the shape, faculties etc. ie if they can also hear, see, feel and think the way we do. Perhaps they may have different faculties which may be totally unpercievable by us. We will find out someday if we can survive on this planet till then.
