Personal background
I grew up in the beautiful Frisia which is a part of Germany (close to Jever to be exact). I am 38 years old and live "far, far" away from home in Buxtehude, a small town south of Hamburg. My wife and I have got 3 lovely children: Judith-Sarah (a horse-maniac, 15), Rebecca (learning violin, 7) and Onno (our Jeckill-and-Hyde monster, age 4).
I work as a software designer in a large ensurance company in Hamburg. My hobbies are computer and programming (surprised?), playing saxophone, inline skating and drinking tea (about 3 liters / 6.3 pints per day when I'm in the office).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I first heard about SETI when I read "Contact" by Carl Sagan, but the first time I saw SETI@home was in my former company. One day I came into the office and stared at a nice and interesting screen saver. The first thing I did after logging in was to download the software.
Is there any intelligent life on other planets? Who knows. But if "they" do exist we should contact them. I don't believe they already visited this planet (like they said in a cartoon "...because of their intelligence"). Contacting them and exchanging thoughts and knowledge will bring ahead mankind... maybe... I think...
Maybe my generation will find them, or (even more possible) one of the following ones, but one day (I'm sure) mankind will talk to aliens. What do they look like? How do they live? What kind of technology do they use? Which programming languages do they prefer? :-) Yes, I am sure, it will be an exciting experience. So, go ahead SETI, and may the source be with you.
