Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It's a given, by now, that life exists else where. It's almost a given that some of that life will be intelligent. What I see as interesting is wondering how we'd react. Also, even if there was an upper limit to intelligence and Humans are there, as a species [I'm HIGHLY doubtful on BOTH points], the odds of our coming out at JUST the right time to be on par technologically with even ONE other race are vanishingly small! Add to that, that there is nothing that says intelligence will develope the same flavor as ours [We STILL can't talk to dolphins and Whales yet!], and THEN add into the mix that Humans are a very self-centered species [We've put Greed over good Stewardship. Most of us do not own our actions, or even think about the consequences of same.]. All this to say:

1) A bona fide message from 'out there' would be a nice wake up call for us.

2) We need to get our act together BEFORE sending out any intentional invites.

3) Even if we KNEW 'they' were both friendly and highly evolved. [Likely as they are still around.] Unless they approached us with caution, they might hurt us while meaning to help us.

4) Even just the KNOWING that we are NOT alone [Which, on the whole, I feel and think would be VERY good news!], would take time to sink in on many levels, as an individual and all the way up to the UN.

5) Any intelligence that has done their homework may decide to leave us alone until we show signs of growing maturity: no wars in X amount of time, taking care of the environment and each other.

6) Humanity needs to transcend itself. We did it, for a short time, with the goal of going to the Moon. I think we should be eyeing Mars NOW. Right now, Seti@home is doable. Even if it goes through EVERYTHING and finds NOTHING [HAH!], it would still be worth it--if only because we've shown ourselves a new way of working together.

7) If we can survive ourselves for one or two more centuries, then we will probably be welcomed into the Federation, or whatever it will be called.
