Personal background
I'm a Software Engineering student at Glasgow University in Scotland, currently in my second year. My interests include games, drink, women, random philosophical musings and confusing the hell out of complete strangers.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does alien life exist? I hope so, not for our sake but for the sake of future generations. Things will start to get boring really quickly if, once we start colonizing other star systems and all that nonsense, we discover that we're completely alone. In fact I predict if this is the case we would probably create an alien race of our own, stick them in a nice remote corner of the galaxy and watch them develop into a race of their own, simply because there would be little else to do. Perhaps someone else has done that with us? Stroke those beards.

I've little doubt that other intelligent life HAS existed at some point in the rather lengthy life of our universe, but there is the problem that intelligent life need not develop at the same time. Thousands of intelligent races could have arose, spread across their respective galaxies then died out in some massive catastrophe or war, and due to the rather long life of our universe each race may have been completely alone for the duration of their existence. Let's not also forget how HUGE the universe is, and the countless millions of galaxies there are. Thousands of races could exist in the same time frame, but could be separated by millions of light years since they are in galaxies of their own.

Still, we won't know any of this unless we try looking for them, right? Hence the reason why I run SETI@HOME on my PC. There are other reasons, like the fact my PC is on 24/7 and it seems an awful waste for my CPU to be idle for 3/4 of the day while i'm out or sleeping when it could be doing something useful and important. There are quite a few distributed computing projects now, but I think this one is still one of the most interesting. I like the idea of NANO@HOME though, have a look here: http://www.aeiveos.com/~bradbury/Proposals/NanoAtHome.html
