Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
yes. ET life exists. It is most likely that at least one race of ET's has already discovered US, but as for "first contact" on an official basis, it's more likely that WE will initiate it. It very well may be that ET's recognize the possible negative impact they COULD have if they just showed up one day and announced themselves. As for transmitting a beacon, it may not be wise to do something like that, because you never know who might answer the call. But if one were sent, the original message from the 70's is sufficient, I think. And it would need to be sent at regular intervals for a long period of time, possibly years, if someone of a technology like ours is to actually receive it. Hoping for more advanced technology to detect our signal may in fact be at least naive and more possibly very dangerous. If a beacon said "here we are" to the wrong group of people, we might quickly find ourselves in an undesirable situation, or at the least losing some or all of our freedoms due to manipulation of our governments (and so on).

I run SETI@home in order to assist the SETI program in proving conclusively that intelligence exists outside of our solar system. I believe that it is an EXCELLENT solution for individual citizens to contribute this way INSTEAD of having some big-budget gummint program waste our tax money on some big-iron computer. It is highly innovative, and demonstrates the power of distributed processing [I have tried to make this kind of point before, and a lot of people just don't 'get it' - there is a LOT of "big iron" mentality out there, like dinosaurs who refuse to die out].
