Profile: Patrick Houghton

Personal background
I became interested in astronomy when I was about 6 or 7 when I received a book on the subject. All the facts, the sizes and distances of everything and all the wonderful, beautiful pictures just amazed me, astonished me and got me started. Since then, I have been a keen amateur. I am a member of the local astronomy society, have joined the UK Society for Popular Astronomy (SPA), have made my own website (http://www.btinternet.com/~patricks.web/astro), featured on British television on an astronomy programme, have written many astronomical related articles for the local community newsletter and will be giving a talk on the subject soon.
I am a student studying computing. I was orignally going to do astronomy but all the maths unfortunately put me off.
As well as astronomy and computers, I enjoy playing computer games, watching television and films, surfing the net, web site design, robots and going coaster crazy at theme parks!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Life elsewhere in the universe has always fascinated me. The cosmos is such a humongous place with trillions of stars, the chances of intelligent life out there are almost certain. Our curiosity for exploration of the universe will hopefully, one day find out the answer. What will they look like? Tall, short, fat or thin? Will they be purple, blue or green? First of all, we need to find out if they do exist and where. The next step will be to try and communicate with them. This could take hundreds of thousands of years due to the vast distances between objects in space. Eventually, may be after a million years or so, we could, possibly, meet them. Wouldn’t that be the most amazing thing ever?
Every day, we are moving a step closer to finding out the answer to the age old question of “are we alone in the universe” and I just hope that we find that important signal in our lifetimes. It would be the best day of my life!
Science fiction has inspired me and every clear night, I look up into the heavens, staring in awe thinking about the universe and whether or not there is life. Perhaps, I am staring right in the direction of some star system light years away where intelligent life forms live who are staring right back at us wondering the same thing? Hopefully, one day, this science fiction will turn into science fact!
