Profile: Jeffrey Stuart MacKinnon

Personal background
Hi! I am a 54 year old divorced male living in the state of Maine in the United States of America. I have spent most of my career working as a computer systems programmer.

My interests include computers, the Internet, astronomy, Amateur (Ham) Radio (my callsign is KB1RC), and juggling. I have recently started to learn to play the alto saxophone (yes - at age 50! Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?), and am also attempting to learn Português (I am fascinated with Brasil and have visited twice).

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that extraterrestrial life exists - probably including intelligent life. To think otherwise is nothing short of arrogant. I believe the possiblility of having been visited by extraterrestrials, however, is extremely remote. I think our chances of ever visiting extraterrestrials are similarly slim, given the laws of physics as we know them. Communication (even if only one-way) is probably our best hope of contact.

I have the opinion that we should be continuously transmitting beacons as well as continuously searching for signals. We should send basic information such as symbols and diagrams, followed by increasingly more complex information such as our DNA structure.

I think that the benefits of discovering extraterrestrial life would far outweigh the dangers - not the least of which would be the development of a stronger bond among humankind.

Why do I run SETI@home? I run it to increase the odds, however slightly, of making such a discovery.

SETI@home is, simply put, a remarkable project!
