Personal background
At the age of 34 I am beginning to understand what life is really all about. I am a corporate executive, as well as, a Network Engineer. My only hobby is sailing, which I do on Boston Harbor as often as I can. It dawned on me not too long ago that if we do not all work together in the near future we, as a species, are not going to last all that long on this planet. Four and a half billion years have brought us to this point on the time line as a planet and humans are doing their best to ruin it in a blink of an eye, geological blink that is. I attended the University of Connecticut and studied biology. During a Student Work semester I was fortunate enough to get involved with computers have been working with them ever sense. I have had a Macintosh computer in my life since 1984 when my father purchased his, upgrading from an Apple 2C or E. I believe that given a chance technology can be used for the greater good, people just need to see that the greater good includes the whole planet.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extraterrestrial life exists. It is a matter of statistical reason that life has to exist beyond our tiny section of the Universe. It is likely that humans will find life in the ice of one of our moons of Jupiter or the like. The life forms that we find first will be microscopic, but the meaning behind their existence will be the important step.

Whether humans send a "beacon" for others to follow is a good idea in the sense that it will demonstrate the desire to be found. Interstellar travelers are not likely to need a "beacon" to follow in order to find us. In the "beacon" we should include all of the languages of the world, including math and computer languages.

I run SETI@home because distributed computing is one thing that I can donate for the greater good. I hope that even if we do not "find" life this way it is partly the search that is important. We need to demonstrate to the world that we can work together in order to get to where we need to go.
