Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1. It's narrow minded to think that "Earthlings" are the only form of intelligent life in the universe. I think that we will be contacted, as we have no firm grasp on interstellar travel or communication...yet. The benefits are mind-numbing, and can only be imagined. However, the dangers could lead to a complete wiping-out of two species due to aggression, fear, and/or disease.
2. I think that we should send out a beacon. It shows that the human race is an intelligent race seeking to further our knowledge of the universe. It's a well estabished fact that mathematics is the purest form of communication. We should send some type of encryption/decryption for as much pertinent information about the humans species as possible. Updated "Voyager" data for example.
3. I run SETI@home because I feel that it's a worthy cause in trying to establish some form of extra-terrestrial communication. I think the project comes under too much public and political scrutiny, seen as a waste of time and resources. I feel that we should focus our efforts on leaving these terrestrial bonds and head for the stars. If the SETI@home project can help us in those dreams, it's a worth-while endeavour. Having no formal scientific education, I have no suggestions other than keep up the good work, and perhaps optimizing the code for speedier calculations and built-in queues for WU's. |
