Pop quiz! Without looking it up because that would be cheating.

What's the difference between a plutoid and a plutino?

Ya got me on this one, for sure! What's the difference between the two? I gotta know now :)

You're right. There's some people that say that Extraterrestrials do exist and that's it's only a matter of time before this is made certain.

But there are some people that say that there is no possible way that Extraterrestrials exist. Also: The S@H project recently has had some trouble with sending workunits...so therefore....

I guess all hope is lost in some people's eyes.

I, for one, am not among the latter group mentioned. I still believe that the search for ET's in every aspect is still worth it. Moreover; every cost I personally have spent on a cruncher and *ALL* of the costs associated with said cruncher (upgrades and monies needed for the increased utility bill); that is, a computer specifically created to participate in the S@H Project for the sole purpose of joining with fellow S@H participants to possibly lend a hand in "the search", is most definitely worth it. Regardless of all the naysayers, I honestly believe that there is something other than the Human race out there somewhere.

That's just a personal belief, and more than enough reason for myself to be a participant. For all those slamming the S@H Project for one reason or another, or even those holding the view that there is no reason to search for ET's as they don't exist, all I can offer is: That's your opinion. I have my own. All I can say is: The search is optional; if you believe it is a futile effort, than feel free not to participate in The Search.

No work on 4 machines. One full day now. :((((
Why donate to SETI????

They're working hard to sort out the issues, I'm sure. Hardware issues have been a big problem; and that's true for any kind of project. Don't give up hope, Lynn! Every penny helps for upgrades to help correct and even prevent these kinds of things. But, alas! There will always be hiccups along the way. Try to stay positive, it will get better soon :)

How do you set up a backup project? If I have one set to "no new tasks" in BOINC, but have my S@H project to allow work from other projects when no work for S@H is available, will work for other projects still be downloaded?

Just got 40 some-odd WU's. Hope this means things are looking up for everyone :)

[ Edit: Yeah, nevermind. I got a lucky pull, I guess. Back to no new tasks ]

There are limits even on a star ship. Star ships use good old fashion plumbing and waste processing/storage according to the technical manual. The space yard assembles space ships instead of replicating them. We know they grow grapes for wine and some foods instead of replicating them. Could it be because the custom touches that a replicator is unable to reproduce or the replicator can't provide a true duplicate.
Granted on a star ship it would be better to store raw material for the replicator so the decision of what to make can be made at the time of need instead of attempting to stock a star ship with everything one might want.
Still on the other hand the replicator is the ultimate fast food because you can order just about any meal you want and have it in seconds. Try that the next time you eat out.

+1 This was awesome :)

Bones's sick bay in star trek had couches where they could work out what was wrong with you. The doctor in Voyager had a hand held device to do the same thing. We now have Cat scans and MRI almost very close to it.

The Doctor's name on Star Trek Voyager was Joe, and the device he used was a medical tricorder ;) (I seriously should start a Star Trek Voyager trivia thread, lol.) And it was far superior to Cat scans/MRI's, hehehe. *high-fives Chris* All in good fun, my friend :)

ugh. I personally don't believe it is wise to actively attempt to signal ET's. There is a strong danger element present, and with no plan in place if the mission is a success...I just don't know if a 50/50 chance of a friendly ET encounter is a risk we as a civilization should act upon.

I've been getting an awful lot of shorties since I've updated my GPU's and started running cuda50's, not all, but a lot. Just wondering if everyone else has gotten a lot of this as well and if it's a normal thing and nothing for me to worry about. Thanks in advance for any input, fellow crunchers ;)

We Do NOT All, Like Each Other.

I just don't understand why this is or how it could happen. I don't know what causes one cruncher to not like another. Is their computer producing too many errors, or in another way causing a negative impact for the Project? Is it something they said in the forums, perhaps disagreeing with the views of another in a negative way in the form of a personal attack like I said in my earlier post? What is/are the causes for the dislike of another cruncher?

We are NOT All in 'This' Together.

I might not understand this either. I have always felt that we're all part of the same Project and that because of that there's a sort of comradery amongst all of us crunchers.

There's one thing I know for sure: for every opinion I have, there is at least one other. It's one thing to have a discussion on opinions or ideas as long as it's done in a civilized manor, possibly even conducive to concord (although, not always achievable). Disagreement is one thing, and it's a natural thing. It's another thing to retort on someone's opinions or ideas in the form of a personal verbal attack. I said it earlier, but I don't think it's good seeing people here fight and argue over things when we're all in this project for the same purposes.

It is HARD to discuss/debate on some things that you have a personal attachment to and dislike seeing others not "get it" or agree with it; I certainly am not impervious to this at all, and I don't think there's many out there that has something they wouldn't get mad about at some point or another during discussions. But devoting an entire forum that is a place to vent has it's merits...it does keep it out of the other forums like some pointed out earlier on this thread. But it's also a specifically set-up location devoted to allow people to argue over things. It may start out healthy, but a lot of times it turns into negative comments and anger between posters in threads.

In the end, I don't really know what the ramifications would be in the forums if the Political Forum was shut down. But I really don't like seeing Seti@HOME people fighting with each other. We're all in this together, and we all have our differences in life and differences in opinion.
39) Message boards : SETI@home Science : Seti@HOME questions (Message 1658851)
Posted 29 Mar 2015 by Profile AkioProject donor
Hey folks! I've had some long overdue questions I've been hanging on to for a long time that I hope y'all can help me with. I just want to let y'all know: I have no scientific background what-so-ever. A lot of stuff you guys talk about on the forums I don't even understand, whether project related or not. I've got a High School diploma, but the extend of my science knowledge comes from watching Star Trek. (Let the eye-rolls commence).

Seriously though, I feel a little out of place when wanting to ask questions because I don't want to sound like the village idiot, but I think it's about time to say that yeah, I ain't that bright when it comes to some stuff, and I'm asking for some clarification. I hope you guys are cool explaining things that may seem rather simple or trivial, and I hope I don't make anyone upset by asking these questions for my own personal clarification.

I do, however, want to point out that I share the belief with some others that there are other intelligent beings out there in the universe. I would also like to think of the future of humanity with a positive spin and would hope that we will one day explore distant places.

The only thing I can do is lend my computer processing power towards this project in hopes that this project may one day lead to proof that there is in fact other intelligent life out there. But, I don't really know how this project works in its entirety. I know how the project gets the data and how it disperses it to personal computers around the world, and that it gets transmitted back to Berkley. But, what then?

Is the information somehow combed through looking for possible signals? I thought that that would be done by the ntpckr? (which is, and has been, offline for a long long time)

If none of the data is being analyzed, where does the data get stored? And if it is indeed stored, where is it stored? And if it's stored, are there any backups in place if hardware failures occur so none of the stored data is lost?

I appreciate you guys' help ;)
