I want to find out why my system is acting weird. it is running on a dedicated computer and was working fine until two days ago now it wont talk to the server. it says limit of 3 daily quota?? also it keeps deferring the communications. and all of the last 40 WU come up with Client ERROR, What in the world is gooing on and how can i talk to someone directly about the program and not just put question on the darn forum???? Any help would be appreciated

There are plenty of people around here who could probably help but they'll need a lot more info: computer, OS, BOINC version, error messages... etc.

By the way if you're using a mac it's probably the shared memory problem - in which case a reboot will fix it temporarily but it will recur periodically if your computer runs 24-7. A more permanent fix requires a change in shared memory allocation.

Now that was a cheerful novel...

Novel? I thought it was a serious autobiography!

Hi all,
Asked this over in questions and problems and got no reply so thought I'd try here....

Been running 5.4.9 on my G5 iMac (OS X 10.4.6) for several weeks now. A few weeks ago I got the following error:

Outcome Client error
Client state Computing
Exit status -185 (0xffffff47)
Computer ID 2411694
Report deadline 21 Jun 2006 8:08:44 UTC
CPU time 0
stderr out
<core_client_version>5.4.9</core_client_version>
<message>
Couldn't start or resume: -144
</message>

A computer reboot fixed the problem but not before I'd already trashed 60 WUs. Previous to this I was getting a "Couldn't destroy shared memory: system shmctl" message every few hours but without any obvious problems. Then a few minutes ago the same problem happened again - luckily I was here and I only trashed 6 WUs. Message log reads:

Fri 2 Jun 14:45:50 2006|SETI@home|Can't create shared memory: system shmget
Fri 2 Jun 14:45:50 2006|SETI@home|Unrecoverable error for result 20mr99aa.15250.24672.953400.3.25_3 (Couldn't start or resume: -144)
Fri 2 Jun 14:45:50 2006||Rescheduling CPU: start failed
Fri 2 Jun 14:45:51 2006|SETI@home|Unexpected state 7 for task 20mr99aa.15250.24672.953400.3.25_3
Fri 2 Jun 14:45:52 2006|SETI@home|Computation for task 20mr99aa.15250.24672.953400.3.25_3 finished

Once again a reboot seems to have fixed the problem. Any suggestions would be great - I have the full message log if anyone would like to see it. Thanks

Robert Jordan - the WHEEL OF TIME series... think ive got up to 10 novels of his, each one is BIG [around 800 pages]... so it takes a few months to plow through all these

Ben Bova - lots of good stuff from him
Tobias Hill - The Cryptographer...a good read 264 pages.
Robert Harris - ENIGMA 387 pages
Phillip Finch - F2F .. a psycho stalks the net, death is a call away... 280 pages
Clive Cussler , he carries certain characters through series of books

off the sf track but worth it.. Takashi Matsuoka - Cloud Of Sparrows... a realy good read

The Philip K. Dick collected short stories are fantastic. I have 5 of the 7 (or is it 6?) volumes and love to read a few every now and then. His novels are all amazing as well although I find I can only read one at a time or I start feeling very disconnected from the world - not surprising really when you consider the character of the author.

Hi,
Been running 5.4.9 on my G5 iMac (OS X 10.4.6) for over a week now with no problems. However when I got in this morning I found that every WU since 5:00 yesterday (nearly 60 WUs) reported a client error with:

I guess you could ask the same of all the inteligent humans who allow themselves to be murdered every year....

Intelligence can only get you so far I suppose.

I don't think we know the answer to that, yet. But I don't go for the theory that they're committing suicide, that's very rare in nature. That's why I speculate that the water has somethow become "unbearable". To me, it's panic thing, like people jumping out of the forth storey window to escape the horrors of a fire, even though the chances of surviving the fall are slim.

I've heard some suggestions that its high intensity sonic pollution that's disorientating whales and leading to beaching. There was some correlation between regions with powerful military sonar nets and increased whale beachings. The data was in a paper a few years back but if I can find the source I'll post it here.

Unfortunately not, its just a method of keeping track of your contribution really - some people use it competitively to keep score.

Yes.... this is known as progress.

Nothing wrong with progress...

As long as we don't call something fact, when in fact, it really isn't a fact at all... ;)

I think you'll find tht 99% of the time the people who actually do the work given field will never use the word fact. Its usually the media who add that inacurate tag. We generally say "our current understanding is..." or "current information would suggest...". Researchers who claim definite answers are the ones who don't get published.

Hi all,
I'm using the new 5.4.9 on a G5 iMac and I've gotten this error message a few times since late last night. I noticed it before with an earlier version of the official manager and menubar but it never occured when I switched to MacNNs superbench BOINC.

Does anyone know what this means, whether its a problem I need to worry about and if so how to fix it?

Thanks a million.

Use Sandpaper and scrub off all that dry skin.

Then fill in the dips and scratches with plastic wood, and coat it with gel. That way the hairs stand up!

I have this weird noise in my ears which approximates to SHMBO. How can I cure it?

If weed was also legal you would most certainly multiply the problems (1-4) as a cross-section of society who don't currently drink may take up weed. Or drinkers that don't smoke weed, may start taking both or just weed! Does this make sense?

The net results: An increased use of drugs.

I can't agree. Take Holand for example. Cannabis use is actually lower there than in many other european countries (my own home of Ireland being one, I'll dig out the stats later - wikipedia quotes Drug policy of the Netherlands).

Use of cannabis is safer due to the regulation of suppliers and the surroundings in which it must be sold and the legalised sale also generates useful tax revenue. All of this without resulting in a run-away drugs problem. Some of this must be due to the Dutch attitude towards drugs but it does make interesting reading.

Does someoneelse get the 403 error now?

Getting the same here on all 4 machines. I assume it is because Seti has changed upload port and/or IP address and my router needs to know it but I dont know for sure. I was port monitoring and when I told it to upload results, no port opened. It just said it was attempting and immediately died with this error. I updated from Boinc 5.48 to 5.49. 5.48 wasnt doing this.

Nope the assimilators which deal with uploads are just off-line so things will return to normal when they are restarted. For the moment downloads are working fine so no one will run out work. no panic

Perhaps we should focus our energies back here on good old terra firma until things are "managed better" before we get granduous ideas about colonising space.

What if we don't get things sorted out back here on terra firma?? How long do you reckon we have as things stand right now?

We need new resources and more importantly we need new technologies to make the most of the resources we have and if there's one thing that space exploration and commercial exploitation have in common its the continuous drive for newer more efficient ways to utilise resources. In an ideal world space exploration would be funded by governments for the common good - in the absence of that particular utopia I'll settle for profit driven research and exploration to achieve at least some of the same goals. Something is better than nothing!

The guys at Berkeley will get in later, have a coffee then sort it in the next 6-12 hours.

And then shut it down for their weekly backup.
So make that 11 to 14 hours before it back up.

I just increased the queue on one of my machines so it would download some WU's as it was about to run out of work. It downloaded enough to get me through this "upload" outage and the scheduled outage.

Just to point out that all 4 assimilators are down according to the server status page so things should return to normal (eventually!) when they are back up and running.
