How do i Contact a SETI or BOINC manager for this program not just the forum??
(Message 381573)
Posted 29 Jul 2006 by Bakareth Post: I want to find out why my system is acting weird. it is running on a dedicated computer and was working fine until two days ago now it wont talk to the server. it says limit of 3 daily quota?? also it keeps deferring the communications. and all of the last 40 WU come up with Client ERROR, What in the world is gooing on and how can i talk to someone directly about the program and not just put question on the darn forum???? Any help would be appreciated There are plenty of people around here who could probably help but they'll need a lot more info: computer, OS, BOINC version, error messages... etc. By the way if you're using a mac it's probably the shared memory problem - in which case a reboot will fix it temporarily but it will recur periodically if your computer runs 24-7. A more permanent fix requires a change in shared memory allocation. Robert |

Help?? Couldn't start or resume: -144
(Message 323344)
Posted 2 Jun 2006 by Bakareth Post: Hi all, Asked this over in questions and problems and got no reply so thought I'd try here.... Been running 5.4.9 on my G5 iMac (OS X 10.4.6) for several weeks now. A few weeks ago I got the following error: Outcome Client error Client state Computing Exit status -185 (0xffffff47) Computer ID 2411694 Report deadline 21 Jun 2006 8:08:44 UTC CPU time 0 stderr out <core_client_version>5.4.9</core_client_version> <message> Couldn't start or resume: -144 </message> A computer reboot fixed the problem but not before I'd already trashed 60 WUs. Previous to this I was getting a "Couldn't destroy shared memory: system shmctl" message every few hours but without any obvious problems. Then a few minutes ago the same problem happened again - luckily I was here and I only trashed 6 WUs. Message log reads: Fri 2 Jun 14:45:50 2006|SETI@home|Can't create shared memory: system shmget Fri 2 Jun 14:45:50 2006|SETI@home|Unrecoverable error for result 20mr99aa.15250.24672.953400.3.25_3 (Couldn't start or resume: -144) Fri 2 Jun 14:45:50 2006||Rescheduling CPU: start failed Fri 2 Jun 14:45:51 2006|SETI@home|Unexpected state 7 for task 20mr99aa.15250.24672.953400.3.25_3 Fri 2 Jun 14:45:52 2006|SETI@home|Computation for task 20mr99aa.15250.24672.953400.3.25_3 finished Once again a reboot seems to have fixed the problem. Any suggestions would be great - I have the full message log if anyone would like to see it. Thanks Robert |

Dick collected short stories are fantastic. I have 5 of the 7 (or is it 6?) volumes and love to read a few every now and then. His novels are all amazing as well although I find I can only read one at a time or I start feeling very disconnected from the world - not surprising really when you consider the character of the author. I've heard some suggestions that its high intensity sonic pollution that's disorientating whales and leading to beaching. There was some correlation between regions with powerful military sonar nets and increased whale beachings. The data was in a paper a few years back but if I can find the source I'll post it here. Its usually the media who add that inacurate tag. We generally say "our current understanding is..." or "current information would suggest...". Researchers who claim definite answers are the ones who don't get published. Robert |

Posted 17 May 2006 by Bakareth Post: Hi all, I'm using the new 5.4.9 on a G5 iMac and I've gotten this error message a few times since late last night. I noticed it before with an earlier version of the official manager and menubar but it never occured when I switched to MacNNs superbench BOINC. Does anyone know what this means, whether its a problem I need to worry about and if so how to fix it? Thanks a million. Robert |

I can't agree. Take Holand for example. Cannabis use is actually lower there than in many other european countries (my own home of Ireland being one, I'll dig out the stats later - wikipedia quotes Drug policy of the Netherlands). Use of cannabis is safer due to the regulation of suppliers and the surroundings in which it must be sold and the legalised sale also generates useful tax revenue. All of this without resulting in a run-away drugs problem. Some of this must be due to the Dutch attitude towards drugs but it does make interesting reading. |

Privatizing Space Exploration

What if we don't get things sorted out back here on terra firma?? How long do you reckon we have as things stand right now? We need new resources and more importantly we need new technologies to make the most of the resources we have and if there's one thing that space exploration and commercial exploitation have in common its the continuous drive for newer more efficient ways to utilise resources. In an ideal world space exploration would be funded by governments for the common good - in the absence of that particular utopia I'll settle for profit driven research and exploration to achieve at least some of the same goals. Something is better than nothing! Robert |
