1) Message boards : Number crunching : El Capitan and BOINC 7.6.12 jump in performance (Message 1733925)

So what you're all saying is that the new faster SSE versions of the OS X client came out about the same time as we upgraded to El Capitan? Is that correct?

Regarding El Capitan experience, I would say I am quite pleased. I'm on an 27" iMac, Late 2009, on 24/7, with record uptime of almost 3 months and was lately experiencing frequent freezing issues under Mavericks (basically I believe it was some major process crashing, since I had no interaction whatsoever, although audio for one kept on playing). El Capitan has been running solid since updating.

On a sidenote, since I updated to El Capitan and reinstalled BOINC, I have been having errors when the project is utilizing the GPU (Radeon HD 4850). I guess -TBar- it's the errors you're talking about in you post; however, I thought HD4850 had openCL support, and don't remember such frequent errors in SETI@home in the past. What could be the culprit?

I also note that even when running 4x SSE tasks at 100% CPU utilization, CPU temp stays at 67°C and fan RPMs at lowest 1800. That's interesting... Any comments on that?

Already done that; however, it would be more logical for that option to be in computing preferences, stored locally, since it a... local issue.

So I guess my 5-year old iMac which Apple insists it supports openCL 1.0, actually doesn't; that's the only thing I can think of that could be the culprit of all v7 7.05 GPU tasks failing with "computation error" status.

I should go ahead and disable the ATI GPU usage, but it seems like the only place I can do this is through project preferences, which will affect all computers on my account running seti@home, even those that are able of computing v7 7.05 results using an ATI GPU.

Any other way?

Tried resetting the project a second time... This time made sure that the <dont_verify_images> flag was set. Same results. What I noticed was though, that all downloads started as expected (work units, clients, extra files, images) and nothing was failing until a .jpg was downloaded. At the same time the .jpg download failed, all work units downloads failed as well. The rest downloads completed successfully. Looks like this is a BOINC issue, I will move my thread over there, as well...

I will check later the xml file for the <dont_verify_images> flag, the host is a bit remote.

However, I don't get it; Just wiped BOINC and reinstalled from scratch. I personally observed the download of three 8-MB astropulse work units, there was real incoming traffic. BEFORE the downloads completed (while still active on BOINC Manager's "transfers" tab), ALL THREE were deemed as "error while downloading" under Manager's "tasks" tab. Why's that? Just because a project image failed to download correctly? I really don't get this behavior, never seen it before.

Here's the log file of the transfer I am referring to:

OK, I have a first-seen situation here... I set up BOINC with SETI on a new host of mine that's connected through a 3G WiFi hotspot. The host has not been able to download any work, have a look at its link above.

All tasks fail download with error <error_code>-200 (wrong size)</error_code>, but that error is on ap_601.jpg image file and I've set the BOINC client to skip image file verification. Have a look at any unit result Stderr output.

I know the internet provider is compressing images, but why would it not work with image verification set to off? Any hints?

Alex Kan's optimized clients are heavily optimized; both for PPC and Intel Macs. That means that they tend to use the processor more stressfully, producing more heat. For the ones of you who live in the northern hemisphere, it would be a good idea to monitor your CPU temperature if you're on a laptop, and -when necessary- select a different percentage than 100% under BOINC Manager -> Advanced -> Preferences -> Use at most x% CPU time.

As a hint, I am in Greece, it's always 35+C lately, and in order to keep my MacBook's fan from running too loud, I have seti set at merely 25%.

Hello...

I am the BOINC helper stated above, Thanar. I am sorry it took me so long to come back to the forums and have a look, but I've been busy lately. Too busy.

It's the third day today that people complain about seti@home returning a "no work for your platform" error. So, I though I'd stop by...

Seems the problem is due to some upgrades on the scheduler side, although I find it strange for such updates to produce such a problem. Stranger still, the problem only occurs when running the stock SETI client, which is exactly why I tried to give various solutions to people skyping me (I of course am running alex' clients all over).

Hope the situation will be fixed soon, happy I'll be able to help people through Skype once again.

Screen savers are obsolete nowadays. There is no modern monitor (in the last 10 years) that suffers from screen burn. Screen savers were invented more than 20 years ago, and the trend has come till today, but bearing a different character. Maybe they should be renamed to "Eye Saver" of "Boredom Killer", since that's their only reason of existence... Oh, I forgot to say "advertisement"! At last, that's all Windows' default screen saver is...

Posted 18 Feb 2008 by Profile Thanar
Post:
I don't really care about the screen saver one way or another, but just wanted the ability to see graphics on occasion (since the button was offered). But it appears that the Intel client has glitches when graphics do get displayed, as I've found the SETI programs in my Dock and ended up with a couple aborting for computing errors. So I'm going to avoid using the graphics for the most part, just to be safe. At least I'm using the correct client app, though.

As I said earlier, once you don't care so much about the graphics, you could always opt for an optimized client, which is much faster than even the Intel one you're using right now. Optimized clients are coded by people outside the SETI group, but in close cooperation, still. For OS X and Intel CPUs, the optimized client is coded by Alex Kan, and it's a must-have, if you care more for the science and less for the graphic output. You can have a look here, following step 3 downwards, if you are interested in installing the optimized client on your Mac Pros. It will just take 5 minutes of your time on each machine, and you'll see your RAC doubling in a few days...

When using CPU throttling, tasks would tend to restart. Especially on systems that were only attached to one project.

Nope, never had that problem, at least on the throttled machines, all running OSX.

As I said earlier, I used to have a restarting issue (exit with zero status), but that was due to sync-DNS-lookups forcing hartbeat to fail and it's another problem.

5.10.42 brought async-DNS-lookups from what I can see, thus eliminating restarting tasks completely for me.

What the other people are talking about is stubborn WUs which occasionally get through the checkup servers, that refuse to get over a CERTAIN % no matter what.

Although it is beautiful and interesting as to how it happened, I don't believe it is strange. What we are seeing is -actually- LACK of background noise. I believe that something went wrong in the way, from the detection antennae / hardware to the recorders. SETI is searching for signals that are expected to be STRONGER than the background noise and not gaps in background noise, that SHOULD be there in the first place.

Posting in the Wish list forum, I guess you WISH you'd found something... ;)

Every time BOINC downloads a project client by itself it downloads the correct client, on par with the CPU.The i in 5.2.8_i686 stands for "intel". So you're on the project with two Mac Pros. Judging from your RAC, one of your Mac Pro is running (or was running until very recently) very slowly.

I am aware of that. It's just that it is difficult to change the names according to a unified scene, since names are set according to LAN needs. I have multiple LANs with PC1-PC2 names. It would be a nice idea IMHO to be able to rename the computers inside BOINC.
