I find that at least one of the projects I crunch for manages to be up most of the time. If I run out, I can always shutdown and blow the dust out of the mb, ps and fans.

I use a TRENDnet TK-801R 8 port KVM. It works with everything I throw at it, wired PS/2, USB with a USB to PS/2 adapter plug and wireless with a USB to PS/2 adapter. Both keyboard (wired and wireless) and optical mouse work. Works on XP32/64 and Linux.

2) There is no want in any part of the world.

3) There is total democracy in the world - with no corporation or country or interest group holding sway.

Nonsense

I just checked my Athlon 64 X2 4400 and my times for Seti-enhanced varies from 4 hrs to 5 hrs on Linux running the stock enhanced seti client from Seti. That's per cpu.

Just off the top of my head, 7 hrs for a X2 4400 seems a bit long. I have an X2 4400, I will check it later tonight if I don't forget, however, as I recall it is running Linux so it is a bit slower.

2) Pretty graphics don't do squat.
3) I don't run the screen saver.
4) It's their sandbox. If you don't like it, you can always go play someplace else.
5) I donated, twice, to S@H. Did You?

I'm a happy sharer. 3 projects, each gets 1/3 share.
E@H and S@H work well together because the WUs are somewhat the same size as are the due dates. Along comes the last batch of LHC WUs and they all have a due date just a few days in the future. Well...can you say STD and LTD? BOINC stopped working on S@H and E@H until all the new LHC WUs were done. I'm a sharer and I don't like it when other projects manipulate the system for their benefit. That's not what STD and LTD are for. They decided that their project is more important than the others so they set an arbitrary short due date to lock others out and hog the cycles. I guess it's because they are "special" and "important".

I'm not asking about 64 bit addressing.

I do. Why? Because I can.

A few quotes from LHC.

"..I find it quite exciting to know that due to BOINC, we may get to crunch for projects that would have otherwise failed under the traditional DC model (one client & app per project)

innovations like BOINC allow people to do things that would otherwise have never been thought of. I see BOINC being the start of a huge leap forward for science, allowing projects to have their own "Grid" and achieve more accurate results at greater speed than ever."

"...As Chrulle has written here, other groups at CERN are now looking seriously at BOINC applications for their work."

"...there was a back-up plan in case the BOINC project did not work out, and they could have done the essentials of the LHC design in-house, but for more money and less precise predictions."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the BOINCSIMAP site:

More than 10.000 hosts and 5.000 users with credits: Its time to celebrate and to say thank you all that make this project running and beeing sucessful. During the last weeks you have calculated the similarities for more than 1 million protein sequences. Due to your effort we are soon up-to-date, which means that the sequence similarities are calculated for all protein sequences in SIMAP. But there are new sequences to come, both from the regular updates and from importing new databases into SIMAP. So the work will not stop. Additionally we are currently preparing a second application for BOINCSIMAP, which will calculate functional attributes of our protein sequences. This will help to expand our knowledge about the protein universe.

when both are done/used properly then things are great, look at firefox for example, best of both worlds
also with the growth of firefox's popularity, more sites are making "security friendly" sites, ones that don't require javascript etc.

it may look prettier if JS is enabled, but works just the same without

Well that's more due to CSS and the pratical truce in the tag war, than firefox.

namely you no longer need javascript to get you sight to work cross browsers

You need JS to use Gmail.

that struck me as strange so I went to cheg my gmail with both java and JS disables, and it works fine

We are both right. It depends on which view you are using. Here is the message I get using Firefox 1.5 on Xandros linux with JS disabled.

"JavaScript must be enabled in order for you to use Gmail in standard view. However, it seems JavaScript is either disabled or not supported by your browser. To use standard view, enable JavaScript by changing your browser options, then try again.

To use Gmail's basic HTML view, which does not require JavaScript, click here."
